10 Ways to Improve Writing

by Jake O'Callaghan

Many people want to become the perfect writer so I have devised this in-depth list to help you write.

  1. Write.
  2. Read.
  3. Write some more.
  4. Read some more.
  5. Write often.
  6. Read often.
  7. Write daily
  8. Read daily.
  9. Treat all your writings important.
  10. Read like it’s your own writing.

Some people take this list as a hoax, but it couldn’t be more true.  Like an athlete preparing for the Olympics, you have to practice.  When you read, it is like studying other great athletes.

Writing is a little more complicated than that, but if you truly want to improve constant reading and writing is the best way.  I for one know that writing daily on the web has improved my writing superbly.

So don’t complain that your writing isn’t good, practice and observe first, then write.  Get out there and practice up.

Yep, if you want to get better at creative writing, analyze the best novels, and of course, practice a lot.

Good luck, I also am an aspiring creative writer so I know how you feel.

Hey nice tips buddy !

The mistake I repeat often is I don’t “read more” ! :(

And I write in my own style.. I don’t care what others will think… bad of me ! :D

You’re right, practice does make perfect. If you’re struggling or want to know how good you are, create a free blog and distribute it among friends.

Get them to give you some constructive criticism and see where it leads you.

Blogs are a great place to learn writing skills. For one, it’s short enough that even if it’s not very good people will still read it, and hopefully respond. Just make sure you don’t ignore advice, or let the simplicity of a short post make you lazy.

You can usually save a draft, let it sit till the next day or week, then come back to it and see if you still like it. If not, you can rework it and see if it’s improved before publishing.

I completely agree. I have noticed that my writing skills have improved considerably since I started blogging.

Doing the draft thing is a great idea. It is great to look at a post with a fresh mind.

Hello,

Right on man, practice can’t be emphasized enough. That’s the only way I improved my skills during college. Writing was and still is required for anything you put your hand to. :)
