30 Things to do After Publishing a Post

by Jake O'Callaghan

Many bloggers think that they can sit back and relax after working hard at writing a post.  They then complain when there are only a few comments, no one reads it, or few people read it.

This list will give you some great things to do after publishing a post, and will inform you about less effective methods of promotion.

Use These Techniques Every Post

1.  Tweet about it

Nothing is better than almost effortless traffic.  Tweet about your post and it will get seen and retweeted (that is if your post is good and you have many followers).

2.  Retweet it.

Tweet it again later to make sure that your followers know about it.  You can retweet as much as you think is okay without spamming your followers.

3.  Comment on other blogs

Good old Comment Luv is installed on most blogs and displays your most recent post when you comment.

4.  Network

Make sure that your friends and fans on Facebook, Myspace, and other social networking sites know you published a new post.

5.  Post on forums

Some forums, such as Digital Point show your recent blog post.

6.  SEO

A few basic SEO techniques will allow your post to rise in the rankings for long-tailed keywords.

7.  Reply to comments.

A higher comment count can generate buzz about a post.

Use These Techniques On Your Best Posts

8.  Promote on Forums

Promoting your post on forums can really bring in some Read my promoting on forums article if you need help

9.  Link exchange

If you see a related post or article, email the author asking for a link exchange between the two articles.

10.  Digg it, stumble it, etc

Though I recommend waiting for your users to do this, new blogs can benefit from the traffic.

11.  Submit to blog post directories

These can work pretty well for traffic.

12.  Email it.

Asking bloggers to look at your post is a sure-fire way to get views and comments.

13.  Email your list.

This is a fantastic and very easy way to get traffic.

14.  Write for article directories.

Linking to your recent post in your signature can provide some great exposure if it is related to the article.

15.  Make a related Squidoo lens.

Add an Rss feed, and anyone that goes to your lens will see your most recent posts.

Bad Things To Do After a Post

Note:  All of this is complete sarcasm, I would never recommend any of these methods.

16.  Spam forums

Nothing is better than going to every thread and posting "check out my recent post."  Everyone at the forum will adore you.

17.  Comment spam

Who doesn’t love comments like "great post, you should check out my blog."  Comments like these are a fantastic way to get your posts read and develop a long-lasting relationship with your fellow bloggers.

18.  Tweet madly

Tweet like your life depends on it!  You need to promote that post, tweet it over and over and over till all your followers "unfollow."  Not to mention that the retweet counter will increase, creating more buzz for your post.

19.  Email other blogger and tell them to Digg your post, comment, and promote it on your blog.

Once again you are gaining exposure while building relationships with other bloggers.  Remember, the most popular blogger the better.  They don’t have anything better to do…

20.  Utilize Yahoo Answers

I use this method all the time!  Lets look at an example:

Question:  Is my recent post freaking awesome?

Details added to question:  Go check out this post (link) and then you can answer the question.

Answer: You have issues

Answer: Spammer

Answer:  I had to go to the post to see how bad it is.

Answer: 2 points!

Answer:  The post sucks…

As you can obviously see, using Yahoo Answers is a great way to gain traffic to your recent post.

21.  Hack into other blogs.

Or hire a hacker to do it. (:  Then you can erase all their posts and put links to your recent post there instead.  The blogger will eventually regain control of his blog, but by then you will have some serious promotion for you blog.  Make sure to thank the blogger you hacked.

22.  Hack into news networks.

Broadcast the news, "extremely awesome post posted on (your blog)."

23.  Use outside promotion

Spray paint your URL to your chest, take off your shirt, and scream "check out my recent post" while running throughout the world.

24.  Use persuasion.

Tell people you will moon people is they don’t visit your recent post.

25.  Throw food.

Offer to clean the person’s clothes (who you threw food at) if they visit your recent post.

26.  Play guitar at 3:00 in the morning loudly.

When the police or your neighbors come looking for you, tell them you will stop when they comment on your recent post.

27.  Get arrested

If you haven’t already, do something that will get you arrested.  Then you can tell all your inmates about your recent posts.

28.  Tell your parents.

Make sure that you force them to read your post, and that they tell their friends.

29.  Go to a restaurant

Leave a good tip and slip in a paper with the URL of your recent post on it.

30.  Inform Internet Browsers

Tell them to make your recent posts the default home-page of everyone who uses the browser.

Furthermore

As you can see, many people go at crazy lengths to get their next post read.  However, it really isn’t hard if you create good content, follow some of the good tips a I gave you, and have patience.  No one created a great blog over night.

Retweeting is something I've found to be incredibly beneficial (given that there is a decent Twitter fanbase). In an older blog I always tweeted once, hoping for a miracle. It's amazing how retweeting (and rephrasing the tweet) can make a world of difference.

Commenting and Social Bookmarking are the easy two. Twitter might be easy but I don’t understand Twitter so don’t use it.

BTW, I would like to know how you added the option of showing no. of comments near the commentator. If you don’t mind, can you share it?

That was very interesting and I do “Tweet and Comment” it. I think thats enough for it. But, before this I do Pinging to service. Though Wordpress can Ping itself, I use Pingomatic.com for Pinging services.

LOL instead of giving your number, you’ll rather write your URL in a tissue paper. Well, the possibility is there, but that can only be a single person to know about the site. Not unless there’s something interesting post there.

cool article. I guess as a blogger you sometimes forget what you can do right after publishing a post. You think you are done after posting it but you are not. Anyway great reminder

Well Jake, it’s a good thing I discovered you when I did. Your blog is now exactly centered in the cross hairs of my G reader. And that’s a good thing! You may have heard of me, I go by pen name of boomerblogger when leaving comments on other blogs, and I am the moron that built a network of some 80 sites consisting of blogs, a directory, websites, landing pages, and Amazon stores. Up until a few months ago I was the idiot that built all this without leaving a single comment on another blog, joining any kind of forum, in other words behaving like I was totally ignorant of the 30 things you should do after you hit the publish button, and I actually was ignorant of them because I was so caught up in the building of my network that I neglected the other half of the equation. My attitude was that after a year or so of posting quality (original), relevant and keyword loaded content the rankings and traffic would come. OH! how misguided I was.

The good news is that now I am getting it, and am well on my way to steady and valuable relationships with other quality bloggers. I have guest posted on a couple of highly rated blogs, I leave link luv and retweets all over the place (without getting manic about it) and am finally seeing my SERP’s improving. I leave quality comments, just a few each day, I don’t comment on posts that don’t move me and I do everything using best practices.

I may have set myself back a year or so but the last component of my network was just finished and I have learned one heck of a lot about blogging in the last 4 years. It is an amazing process, one that I am glad to be a part of. My philosophy about blogging is quality over quantity, and it’s a good strategy when you try to manage too many blogs!

so I made a too long reply of a simple comment that started with…hey, Jake, I like your style and your subjects and I hit the RSS button.

Such a thing happens to many people, and it is great that you are starting promotion. Considering that you have the right philosophy (“quality over quantity”), and are working hard, you should definitely see great success (if you haven’t already).

Guest posting may be the best way to build blog traffic, so the fact that you guest post on popular blogs is great. Building relationships with other bloggers is not only great, but is one of the things that makes blogging so fun.

Thanks for becoming a loyal reader of Web Journey. You are definitely inspired me to work on producing better and better content.

A very interesting post with many points listed. One must never stop after posting, always promote your post as much as possible. One must make sure one does not spam users otherwise it can reflect badly on you and your site.

BTW, I will be adding this to my Monday roundup next week as I’m sure many of my readers can benefit from it.

Great Post.

Tweeting is handy if you have a massiva twitter followers base, of course you need to have a twitter account that actually reads your tweets.

For the rest I think you should promote your post as much as you can. I only promote a post if I think it is worth it. I will most likely promote a post I think is absolute fantastic, rather then promoting a crappy post.
