Are You Obsessed?

by Jake O'Callaghan

Obsession can happen, and it is a serious issue.  I have devised a list of questions to ask yourself to see if you are obsessed with the web.  Note that if it is your job, it is different.  I will get to you next post.  This list are just examples, there are many more things that you qualify you as obsessed.

Are you Obsessed Checklist?

  1. Do you spend over three hours a day on the computer?
  2. Do you feel the need to constantly check your blog or site?
  3. Do you feel the need to constantly check  email?
  4. Do you feel the need to constantly check site traffic?
  5. Do you feel the need to constantly check earnings?
  6. Have you stopped doing other things you loved to spend time on the web?
  7. Do you update your Twitter ridiculously?
  8. Do you keep checking your Myspace or Facebook?
  9. Do you get little or no physical activity?
  10. Do you constantly change your site design?
  11. Do you constantly check your subscriber count?
  12. Is all you seem to think about have to do with the web?
  13. Are almost all your conversations about the web?
  14. Are your eyes constantly tired and bloodshot?
  15. Are you eating by your computer?
  16. Are you leaving the house less and less?
  17. Do your family and friends seem concerned?
  18. Are your friends and family not as close to you as before?
  19. Do you constantly check your comments?
  20. Do you feel your life revolves around the internet?
  21. Do you chat for hours in internet chat rooms?
  22. Do you feel moody or irritable while away from your computer?
  23. Do you put in many hours playing web games?
  24. Do you play Mmorpgs and feel they are like another life?
  25. Have you tried to cut-back on the time you spend, but failed to?

Solving Your Web Obsession

It may be painful when you realize that you do some of these.  As you probably heard before, the first step is admitting your obsession.  Hiding from it will only make it worse.

I know what you are going through.  When I first started getting comments, i constantly checked them.  Same for email and Rss feed subscribers.

Obsession can really affect your life.  It can damage your relationship with friends and family, stop you from doing the hobbies you enjoy, make you un-fit, and many other things.

I found that if you do these steps, you can face any obsession with the web.  It just takes motivation and a willing to actually follow the steps.  You may stumble on your journey to end your internet obsession, but the important thing is getting back up.

  1. Discover the problem. ( if multiple problems, cut down on them one at a time)
  2. Tell yourself that you can do this.
  3. Tell supportive friends or family that you are trying to stop your internet obsession.  Ask them to help you.
  4. Make a list of what you are going to do on the web.
  5. Make sure to set an alarm for when you reach your time limit.  Also, set an alarm periodically for breaks.  Don’t allow you do do anything on the web except for what’s on your list.
  6. Make sure that you do the list in order.  Jumping around wastes time.
  7. Be as specific as you can on your list.
  8. Try to decrease time spent, if it is entertainment.

Awesome post dude.

I wrote a blog post about obsession back in March, and just basically went over what determines the line between “hard work” and “obsession.”

I think the questions you came up with are great, I’m going to answer some of them myself.

Haha, do what you gotta do. :p

One thing about this question “Do you get little or no physical activity?” I think that’s very important. I myself go to the gym a few times a week, and even at home I do my own exercises like weight lifting and sit-ups every night. Even while I’m working, I have an app that’s called “Time Out” and it freezes your screen for any amount of time you want every “x” minutes for you to take a break.

Cool, physical activity really stimulates the brain as well as many other benefits.

Wow that’s pretty cool. How long do you set it for?

It’s set every 25 minutes, I take a 5 minute break. I only have it on when I am writing or designing/coding though. Not when I read.

Awesome post :) I had something like this planned (as I feel it is a growing problem amongst bloggers) but you’ve done it brilliantly :D

I think that the main thing is to put blogging second behind everything, whether it’s school, your social life or anything. Blogging shouldn’t be your priority.

Thanks I’m glad you think I summed it up. I completely agree, you need to put other things first.

I kinda feel obsessed right now; ever since my surgery. I have basically just been in my bed blogging and sleeping. (surgery makes you very tired.
