Page Rank Myths Revealed

by Jake O'Callaghan

I have been looking at webmasters forums for quite a long time.  ( Here’s my post about promoting in forums)  I have to say that a ton of controversial arguments have been fought over Page Rank.  Therefore, I have decided to clear up some myths like I have done with domain extensions.

If you want to learn more about Page rank you can visit the Page Rank guide

Getting links from PR 0 websites harm your sites Page Rank or don’t affect it:

I can honestly see why at first look this would seem logical, but when you look at it again it is obviously not true.  First of all, it is impossible for you to be penalized from sites that link to you.  Second, of all Page Rank is affected by all links that are indexed in Google.  If you are linked to from a page that has Page Rank that is indexed Google’s spiders will crawl your site from that link. ( as long as there is no Nofollow attribute).

Page Rank 0 will not give you much Page Rank, but it does actually give you some.  You have to remember, even though a site says PR 0 on the Google toolbar, it still has Page Rank.  Google looks at sites Page Rank on a different scale than we see.  However, if the site is banned from Google then you will not receive any.

The only ways to increase Page Rank is to get links from other sites

This is not true.  If you have proper linking structure in your site (meaning you inter-link all your pages well) then you will gain page rank.  On my other site, I got to Page Rank 4 without a single Dofollow link.  Obviously, it is important to build links, but it is also important to build content for Page Rank.

Google Adwords gives more money to higher Page Rank sites

To my knowledge, Google does not say anything about this.  I can not fully tell you if this is true of not, but I’m pretty sure it isn’t true.  It is widely believe to be true though.  You will get more money if the amount of people advertising  is higher (which you can find by using Google Adword Keyword tool.  However, I don’t see why Google would give more money for more Page Rank.

If you have a higher Page Rank you will beat the lower Page Rank in search results

This is far from true.  Google uses a very very complex algorithm to rank you in the search results.  I have seen Page rank 0 pages beat my Page Rank 3 pages.  Page Rank is far from everything is Seo.  In fact, page rank shouldn’t be your focus to you have done almost everything else with Seo.

Page Rank is Overrated

Page Rank is overrated if you care about it too much.  However, Page Rank is still a valuable part of Seo.  Is it a little overrated?  Yes definitely.  However, you shouldn’t ignore it.  It’s just a part of Seo.

I don’t care what people say about having PageRank – I still want it. I don’t obsess about it or anything, I just like to have my little green bar filled up a few blocks at the bottom of my browser. It reminds me of the days where PageRank was more important I suppose.

I always thought to gain PR, you needed a link on a site with PR. So it is possible to get PR from PR 0 sites? Sweet stuff.

Yea, me too. I have to admit that I get excited when the Page Rank update comes around.

Yep, I because no pages actually have a PR of 0; Every page that is ranked by Google does give Pr unless the website is banned from Google.

Wow, a very detailed post. There are so many users saying it does not matter and others saying the opposite. I was recently on PR 1 and then started to work on getting more backlinks and my PR jumped to 4.

A question: If page rank is not important, then why are some people scared of paid posts? They are worried about being penalized.

Cool, Pr 4 is great. Getting to Pr 5 and up is when it starts to get hard.

They shouldn’t be worried because you can’t get penalized for getting linked to.

A really great post! By the way thanks for visiting my blog as well.

I have found forums to be a muddled place when it comes to pagerank so it is nice to get some information. I have been a pr 0 since I started my blog in February. Now my blog has just changed to pr 4 so in 3 months it had a rapid change. Hope to see the results of the change in serps and other seo related techniques.

I like having the myths debunked here. I would really enjoy a follow up to this post with more myths and maybe a bonus pagerank stat that seems fake but is real.

I totally agree, people just don’t seem to know about Page Rank. It was really my inspiration to write this article.

Hm, I might do a follow up post. Thanks for your support.

Cool post. I was recently put up to a PR1, so hopefully I can go even further on the next update, but I’m not too fussed about it.

So, in all seriousness, how can PR actually help you? Or is it just a number? :S

It is a part of Google’s measure for you when they decide how high to place you in Serps. However, it is only one part of many things including all the basic Seo stuff like keywords and descriptions.
