There are some great skins out there for Thesis, but most of them just don’t cut it for me; customizing them requires coding, and that really isn’t Thesis to me.   A great skin should make a website look fantastic while allowing easy and in-depth customization options.

If you don’t know, a thesis skin is downloadable files that can easily be uploaded using an FTP program which customize the look of your Thesis theme. Think of it like a Wootheme based on the Thesis framework (a damn good combination).

All my skin troubles were wiped away when Alex from Blogussion released his Thesis Blogussion theme.  Now everyone can create a website or that looks as great as Blogussion, whose design is second to none.

Not to mention the customization options!  Every feature that the Blogussion theme adds is customizable, either from the control panel or by adding widgets.

Don’t have Thesis?  Blogussion will give you 40 percent off their theme when you purchase Thesis through them.  If you haven’t made the great decision to upgrade to the Thesis theme, there has never been a better time (especially considering Blogussion has a temporary sale which saves you 15 dollars)

I personally have emailed Alex questioning him about customizing Thesis, and have received quick and quality replies, and that was before the Blogussion Theme was released!  Purchase the theme, and I know you will receive top notch support on the support forum from one of the best Thesis designers out there and other Thesis users.

There are also tutorials on the forum which are a great bonus.

Though the price may seem a little steep for a skin, your website will greatly benefit from purchasing it.  You will be stunned at how good your website or blog will look immediately after installing the skin, and you haven’t even touched code!  I highly recommend this to anyone who is looking for a semi-unique design, and that doesn’t want to put in the hours to make a unique design.

And lets not forget that your beautiful website will be running on the Thesis theme, a SEO powerhouse with crazy customization options.

Web Journey 1.0 – The Rebirth

by Jake O'Callaghan

Web Journey has definitely seen its share of fazes over its short existence (maybe it’s because I’m a teenager), but as of today, I am starting to actually figure out what Web Journey is.

Web Journey is a blog dedicated to informing people on building traffic, online writing, link building, SEO, (just to name a few examples), all utilized to make money online and eventually make a full time living off of the internet.

It is this policy that I will comply to whenever making posts.  I will not write posts just to entertain; I will provide posts that seriously inform.

Design

A new design is Web Journey’s most obvious change.  Using Thesis I have created this blog with no coding knowledge.  I just followed tutorials, used Thesis’s control panel, and got help from Thesis’s support forum.

The design looks pretty good eh?  Of course there are still improvements to be made, but it definitely stands out as a unique and quality design.  It amazes me that I could actually create a design that could cost thousands of dollars with no coding knowledge; it really shows how the Internet is changing.

Posting Requirements

I will be posting one time a week for starters, then, if time allows, I will post more per week.  Most of my posts right now are more novice posts because I am preparing for Web Journey 2.0.

Another thing I am now including is video posts.  I’m sure that many viewers prefer listening to reading, so video posts will freshen up things.  Trust me, I know how annoying it is reading countless articles.

Expect an even larger update for Web Journey 2.0 which is only a short time away.

Before I took my Computer Applications class, I thought that Microsoft Office was overrated: I thought that Excel and Powerpoint were useless to me, Microsoft Word was only a basic editor, and that there was no use in learning about them.

Boy was I wrong.

After taking the class, it felt like I had just started using a computer again, there was so much newness and amazement. I found the power of Microsoft Office (yes it’s cheesy, but it’s also true).

Microsoft Office is amazing, you probably already know that. However, do you truly utilize it to the fullest? Do you know the power of Microsoft Office?

If you blindly started using Office you haven’t witnessed close to what it can do. Have you tried OneNote? Do you manage finances with excel using the IF function? Did you know you can use Word to create a great looking eBook? There are so many features that the average user doesn’t know.

The way to unlock the true potential of all the programs is to learn all about them. Look at the help pages, take a class, or learn online; all will allow you to use Microsoft Office to the fullest.

I could tell you about Microsoft office’s features, but I’m sure that it will bore most. If you want to learn more about them look google Microsoft

And by all means, make sure that you have Office on your computer.

Your blog or website won’t benefit much directly from Office, but it will benefit when you become more organized and more on top of things which Microsoft Office will do.

Choosing a Domain Name

by Jake O'Callaghan

Your name is the first thing that people will think of when if they remember your site. It is important that you come up with a great one.

Factors of Choosing a Domain Name

These are the factors that you should consider when choosing your name.

1.  Related to Topic

Your domain name needs to be related to the topic of your website so that visitors and search engines know the general topic of your site just from your domain name.

2. Make it Memorable

It is horrible for you if visitors wish to come back to your website but forget the domain name.  To confront this, make your domain name as memorable as possible.

- Make it Catchy

A catchy domain name will stick in visitors minds.  you will know a catchy domain when you see it so put yourself through this "catchy test" on every domain.

If your domain is keyword rich, you can exclude this step to some degree.

- Make it Short

A short domain, is a memorable domain.  Take into account the length of words and the amount of words when choosing a domain. Your domain should be a maximum of three words.

3.  Keyword(s)

Almost every domain name should have at least one general keyword in it.  For example, if you site is about baseball, your domain name should have "baseball" in it.

There are times when you can choose a domain without any keywords in it.  If you do, it should be very catchy and short.

4.  Extension

The domain extension trails the domain.  For example the extension of this website is .me.

It is highly recommended to purchase a .com especially if it is your first domain purchase.  .com is the standard extension for all sites, and you can’t go wrong with it.

If your website is an organization feel free to purchase the .org extension.  Be sure to pick up the .com for the same domain name and redirect it to your .org domain though!

If .com is taken but there is a .net available you can take it, but only if the domain is really good.  Having a different extension is fine, but do note that you will lose some type in traffic (many users naturally type in ".com" instead of your correct extension).

Generic Versus Unique

A generic name is focused on keywords (ex:  soccer-training-guide.com).  A unique domain is focused on memorability (ex:  blogussion.com).

Which type you choose should really depend on what you are trying to accomplish with your website.  If you receive traffic mainly from search engines, a generic domain is a good choice.  If you site is more about type-in traffic, a unique domain is a better choice.

If you have a blog, I highly recommend choosing a unique domain name.

A Domain Name That’s Different From the Site Name?

Yes it does happen, but I don’t recommend it.  Your domain name should reinforce your site name, and memorability.  A domain name that is different from the website name does not do this.

Time to Register it

Have a general idea of what domain you want?  Then it’s time to see if it is available for registering.

If you are creating a website for a business, you can skip this article because you already have your topic ready.

The first thing that happens when people learn they can actually make money on the internet is they rush to create a site.  This is of course very reasonable especially considering how easy most marketers make it sound to make money.

The result is people end up writing about a saturated topic that they don’t know about and don’t like.  This too is also reasonable; most people learn how to get started on the web from "gurus" that teach success on the web.  It is no wonder that many beginners go into saturated niches.

Choosing a topic that you are passionate about and that you are knowledgeable about will allow you to produce quality content while staying interested in a topic.  Think about it: if you are bored with a topic will you be able to write about it daily for years; and if you don’t know about a subject how will you write about it, and how will compete with other websites. Proofreading

Proofreading Online Writing

by Jake O'Callaghan

You have just finished that killer article and are ready eager to push that publish button.  "Wait, I need to edit my article," you think.  Suddenly your post has gotten delayed.

Yay, the proofreading step; the step that all writers, especially beginning ones, love, right?

Okay, maybe not.  However, proofreading, is as essential as writing the body of the article; You must do it to make the article successful.

Actually, you don’t have to do it.  I’m sure as a reader that you love reading grammar mistakes and sentences that don’t make sense.  That’s the type of stuff that makes readers want to read more.

Not to mention, the proofreading stage is a fantastic time to add more content.

Proofreading really isn’t that bad.  It really doesn’t take more than 20 minutes, and it can actually be enjoyable.  What’s not enjoyable about making an article better?

For the most part fear of proofreading is in the writer’s head.  Once you have make it a habit., you really won’t fear it as much.  It’s much easier than actually writing the article.

The Importance of Proofreading

  • Helps prevent grammatical errors.
  • Prevents spelling errors.
  • Improves the article’s flow and sentence structure.
  • Gives the writer a chance to analyze the article’s structure.
  • Allows the writer to take out most of the wordiness of the article.
  • Allows the writer to add in points that he/she may have forgotten to add.
  •  Allows author to take out unneeded words.

How to Proofread

Before proofreading, I highly recommend that you let the article "sit" for a few days.  Leaving your article draft will allow you to come back to it with a fresh mind.  I find that I can find errors more easily, figure out what should be deleted, and add content much better when I wait a few days.

The first thing that every proofreader should do it run their article through a spellchecker.  Most of your spelling mistakes will be fixed.  However, there are some things that get through such as "there."  You may have actually wanted to use "their."  Things like this example come up sometimes, so be sure to be on the look-out for them.

I recommend reading your article out loud slowly and clearly.  You will be able to find more mistakes this way, because writers tend to look over their mistakes when reading silently.  You can also tell what sound good and what sound confusing or wordy this way.

Whenever you come to a mistake, correct it.  Never read through the article before making your corrections because you will often forget some of the things that need to be corrected.

A sane person never succeeds for the goal seems impossible; it is the person that never doubts his success that will ultimately achieve; it is he who conquers the impossible.

This principal applies greatly to the web because to all beginners (myself included) making it on the web seems impossible.  Many people think that the entire principle of making money online is a scam; Bloggers blog for months without seeing a dollar profit.  I personally have been told that I need to think about getting a real job, not a fantasy one.

The Web is a vast and complicated place, a place that can take years of hard work before you can see a decent profit.  Yet, the profits do happen, and when all the quiters have quit and the serious people have worked hard, the money comes (and sometimes in great quantities).

The benefits of becoming a webmaster sound great, but to most they are unachievable.  Most people end up quitting after a few months when they only pocket a few dollars from all their hard work.  Most end up quitting when after 100 posts there subscriber count still remains low.  Most end up quitting when they realize that they are receiving less than 100 visitors a day.  Yes, the web world is a challenging place.

That’s where blind confidence comes in, the ability to ignore all the statistics, and all the results that constantly persuade you to quit.  Ignore everything and just focus on working hard and doing the best you can.  Success will come for those who persevere.

Every blog that has been around for more than three years is at the top of it’s class.  Have you ever seen an old blog that has a low subscriber count or that barely gets any comments?  If you do find one than the blogger didn’t provide good content and didn’t promote nearly enough.

The thing with the web is: low traffic, low traffic, low traffic, spike.  It is when you spike that the traffic and the money comes, and with hard work the spike will come.  Think of Squidoo: after years or providing a good service and good content, their traffic spiked 90 percent in one year!

Persevering through all the odds will bring you success.  Don’t let anything get you down; act like you are just making your blog or website for your own eyes.  Keep working hard, and you will see the gold at the end of the rainbow.

A Warning

Though blind confidence is great, arrogance is definitely not.  If you need to make changes to your blog, don’t think "Everything I do it right" and miss out on making your blog or website better.  You want blind confidence to motivate you to persevere, not hinder the performance of your blog or website.

It sucks when you try really hard to improve search engine rankings and your hard work actually lowers them.  Unfourtunely there is a vast quantity of wrong information out there, and sometimes you will be misinformed.

Make sure that you correct yourself if you use any of these common, yet bad techniques.

Nofollow

Nofollow started out as a great idea, a basic html attribute that tells search engines not to follow the link.  Google said to use it to prevent link spam (commonly found in comments), link to a website that has questionable content (if the website is illegal or something similar), and when selling paid links.

However, webmasters soon started abusing the system.  They thought that they could slap a Nofollow attribute on all links and prevent any link juice loss.  This seemed like a reasonable idea at the time, so many webmasters followed it.

This does not work at all because you still lose link juice, and you mess up the entire linking system.  Read my blog post Everyone Needs to Switch to Dofollow for more information.

Directories

Directories started out as a easy way to build links: everyone loved them.  Now that search engines cracked down on directories, there aren’t many worthwhile directories to submit to.  Submitting your website to hundreds of directories will get you nowhere with search engines, and you might even get penalized (I can’t conform that though).

The two most worthwhile directories are Yahoo and DMOZ.  There are some other good ones out there, but most directories are pointless to submit to.

Link Building

Links building is a great way to enhance search engine position, but many people do it wrong.  You should be shooting for natural, high quality links, but many people get spammy, low quality, unrelated to website topic links.

Using article marketing just to build links, using forums just to build links, commenting just to build links, submitting your site to way too many directories, and building links much to fast are just some ways to abuse link building.  When you do this, you are only hurting your website.  A good post to read to learn more is Link Building is Like Acne.

Anchor Text

Anchor text — if you don’t know — is the text that displays the link.  For example the link "Link Building is Like Acne" above would be the anchor text for that link.

A story that comes to mind when thinking of anchor text is the Google bomb Bush story.  Apparently the Bush administration’s website was linked to so much with anchor text along the lines of "miserable failure" that it came up first for that term in Google even though the words weren’t found on the website.

Yes, anchor text is powerful, but don’t misuse it.  Google wants links to look natural, and you want people to click on links.  When you use the text that best fits the situation you are using the link, people will click through more, you will have varied anchor text (so you won’t get penalized by search engines), and you won’t sound awkward.

I recommend that you stay away from creating artificial anchor text (linking to a link using your targeted keyword over and over) as many people do, but I do recommend that you are aware of it.  For instance, don’t use the anchor text "here", when you can rephrase the sentence to include better anchor text.

Article Marketing

Article Marketing Guide

by Jake O'Callaghan

Article marketing is a great way to build traffic, build a reputation, and build links.  If that combination of benefits doesn’t make you want to article market, then you might as well quit trying to make it on the web.

Article marketing not only works good for websites and blogs, but for other things like Squidoo.  I have successfully used article marketing on a my Squidoo lenses, my website, and this blog.

What is it?

Article marketing is the process of writing articles, submitting them to article directories, and allowing others to use your articles (if they keep your author signature on the article).  All the articles that you submit must be original content.

Article Marketing Benefits

Build Traffic

When your articles gets published on article directories, people will find them.  If your signature is good, many of visitors will click through your signature links.

Build a Reputation

If your articles get published on websites, people will start seeing your name over and over, and will recognize you as an expert on your topic.  This takes a plethora of articles, but it is definitely worth it.

Build Links

Links are probably the most important part of search engine optimization (learn 70 link building techniques).  Every time an article gets published on another site, it includes your signature (which includes links), and good article directories count as a strong link in Google’s eyes.

Breaking Some Myths

When you start looking at article marketing websites or articles, some will tell you its a good idea to submit your article to hundreds even thousands of directories.  Some websites even try to sell you programs that will automatically publish your articles to hundreds of directories, which will "automatically boast your website to the top of the search engine rankings."

Doing this is completely wrong and will never work.  Many article directories aren’t even indexed in Google, and to be successful, you only need to use a few (I personally recommend only using Ezine Articles).  Also, article directories reject duplicate content.  If they didn’t, what would be the point of writing articles?  You could copy and paste an article from Ezine Articles and use it another article directory.

Once people realize that submitting their article to a million directories doesn’t work, they tend to look for programs that rewrite articles.  I don’t recommend these because automatically written articles are often poorly written, or don’t make sense.  If you plan on rewriting articles, rewrite it yourself.  I cover rewriting further on in this article.

Don’t put the articles that you submit to directories on your site.  Even though you wrote the article, Google still marks it as duplicate content, which will lower your search engine rankings.

Where to Submit Your Articles

I recommend submitting most of your articles to Ezine Articles because is the most popular.  However, it might be useful to submit some articles elsewhere for SEO purposes; Google likes links to be from different sites.

By no means a definite list, but it gets the job done for now.  Try searching Google if you want to submit to other directories.

Writing a Successful  Article

Your article should be related to the website or blog you are promoting.  Feel free to come up with any ideas you want; articles can be similar to your content or completely unique; they can be long, short, or medium length.

Even though you can do whatever you want, you should have two goals in mind.

The first goal of your article is to get clicks to your website.  As I stated before, you can place links in your signature.  If these links are related to your article, you will get more clicks.  It helps if you create a good signature which I will go over later.

The second goal of your article is to get it published on as many websites as possible.  This will help you build links (don’t expect many links from high quality websites though), build a reputation ( you will be credited as the author, thus you will build a reputation in your subject if your article is published on many websites), and build traffic ( the more exposure the more clicks).

The best ways to accomplish these goals are to analyze and experiment.

Below all Ezine Articles articles are three headings:  recent articles, most published articles, and most viewed articles for the past 90 days.  Look at some of the articles that were the highest viewed and most published in the category that you will submit your articles to.  Studying the titles and the style of the most successful articles will allow you to write yours accordingly.

You can try rewriting the most successful articles.  This is completely fine as long as you use the articles as guidelines, meaning you don’t copy and paste the article’s content, but rewrite it differently (while adding some new info and excluding some things) while looking at the article.  This is a pretty popular article marketing technique.

After analyzing other articles, start writing some articles.  Your first article probably won’t generate much buzz, your second probably won’t either, or your third…  Yet if you keep trying new things to better your articles, you will eventually hit a break-through.  From then on, it will be relatively easy to create a popular article almost every time.

Creating Great Titles

Creating a title for your article is similar to creating a title for a blog post: it should draw in readers, and include a keyword (most of the time).  Titles are even more important in article marketing because potential publishers and readers scroll through a list of article titles.  To get their attention, you need to have an especially great one.

It is sometimes a good idea to include a keyword in a title because some publishers want to get traffic from search engines.  It doesn’t have to be a high traffic keyword; long-tail keywords work too.

Once again, analyze the articles with the most visits.  Look at their titles and you will get a general idea of the title format that works.

 Creating a Signature That Sells

Write a short but sweet (your life story will bore readers) bio of you.  I recommend that you tell why you are qualified to teach about your subject; this information is much more valuable to the reader (it’s cool if you play chess, but not many people care if your website is about sewing).

Next tell about your website and why it will be useful to the reader.  Link to your homepage and to another article or post (preferable on the website you just mentioned).  This article could be a link to popular post or one that they want to improve its rank in Google or a link to an article that relates or expands on the article that you marketed.  I find that a higher click-through rate comes with the latter.

You may also want to use anchor text in your links for maximum SEO benefit.  For example, if I wanted my website to rank good for soccer guide, I would write Check out my soccer guide website or something along those lines.

Rewriting Articles

You can rewrite articles that you posted on your blog, articles that you already submitted to other articles directories, or articles that other people wrote.

To rewrite, switch around as many words as you can, switch around the order of the paragraphs (though it still has to make sense), and add in new information or cut out unneeded information.

Rewriting is easy, and when you use it to submit many articles, you will see great results with it.

Checking What Articles Are Published

To know where your articles are published simply type in your article title with quotes around it.  For example "why I enjoy gardening."  If your title isn’t generic (which it shouldn’t be) you should see all the websites that are indexed in Google that have published your article.  Note that this does not include email where many articles are published to and sent out to a email list.

Conclusion

Article marketing is such a great way to accomplish some of the hardest goals that webmasters and bloggers want to achieve.  Utilizing it successfully will greatly help you in your web journey.

Many bloggers think that they can sit back and relax after working hard at writing a post.  They then complain when there are only a few comments, no one reads it, or few people read it.

This list will give you some great things to do after publishing a post, and will inform you about less effective methods of promotion.

Use These Techniques Every Post

1.  Tweet about it

Nothing is better than almost effortless traffic.  Tweet about your post and it will get seen and retweeted (that is if your post is good and you have many followers).

2.  Retweet it.

Tweet it again later to make sure that your followers know about it.  You can retweet as much as you think is okay without spamming your followers.

3.  Comment on other blogs

Good old Comment Luv is installed on most blogs and displays your most recent post when you comment.

4.  Network

Make sure that your friends and fans on Facebook, Myspace, and other social networking sites know you published a new post.

5.  Post on forums

Some forums, such as Digital Point show your recent blog post.

6.  SEO

A few basic SEO techniques will allow your post to rise in the rankings for long-tailed keywords.

7.  Reply to comments.

A higher comment count can generate buzz about a post.

Use These Techniques On Your Best Posts

8.  Promote on Forums

Promoting your post on forums can really bring in some Read my promoting on forums article if you need help

9.  Link exchange

If you see a related post or article, email the author asking for a link exchange between the two articles.

10.  Digg it, stumble it, etc

Though I recommend waiting for your users to do this, new blogs can benefit from the traffic.

11.  Submit to blog post directories

These can work pretty well for traffic.

12.  Email it.

Asking bloggers to look at your post is a sure-fire way to get views and comments.

13.  Email your list.

This is a fantastic and very easy way to get traffic.

14.  Write for article directories.

Linking to your recent post in your signature can provide some great exposure if it is related to the article.

15.  Make a related Squidoo lens.

Add an Rss feed, and anyone that goes to your lens will see your most recent posts.

Bad Things To Do After a Post

Note:  All of this is complete sarcasm, I would never recommend any of these methods.

16.  Spam forums

Nothing is better than going to every thread and posting "check out my recent post."  Everyone at the forum will adore you.

17.  Comment spam

Who doesn’t love comments like "great post, you should check out my blog."  Comments like these are a fantastic way to get your posts read and develop a long-lasting relationship with your fellow bloggers.

18.  Tweet madly

Tweet like your life depends on it!  You need to promote that post, tweet it over and over and over till all your followers "unfollow."  Not to mention that the retweet counter will increase, creating more buzz for your post.

19.  Email other blogger and tell them to Digg your post, comment, and promote it on your blog.

Once again you are gaining exposure while building relationships with other bloggers.  Remember, the most popular blogger the better.  They don’t have anything better to do…

20.  Utilize Yahoo Answers

I use this method all the time!  Lets look at an example:

Question:  Is my recent post freaking awesome?

Details added to question:  Go check out this post (link) and then you can answer the question.

Answer: You have issues

Answer: Spammer

Answer:  I had to go to the post to see how bad it is.

Answer: 2 points!

Answer:  The post sucks…

As you can obviously see, using Yahoo Answers is a great way to gain traffic to your recent post.

21.  Hack into other blogs.

Or hire a hacker to do it. (:  Then you can erase all their posts and put links to your recent post there instead.  The blogger will eventually regain control of his blog, but by then you will have some serious promotion for you blog.  Make sure to thank the blogger you hacked.

22.  Hack into news networks.

Broadcast the news, "extremely awesome post posted on (your blog)."

23.  Use outside promotion

Spray paint your URL to your chest, take off your shirt, and scream "check out my recent post" while running throughout the world.

24.  Use persuasion.

Tell people you will moon people is they don’t visit your recent post.

25.  Throw food.

Offer to clean the person’s clothes (who you threw food at) if they visit your recent post.

26.  Play guitar at 3:00 in the morning loudly.

When the police or your neighbors come looking for you, tell them you will stop when they comment on your recent post.

27.  Get arrested

If you haven’t already, do something that will get you arrested.  Then you can tell all your inmates about your recent posts.

28.  Tell your parents.

Make sure that you force them to read your post, and that they tell their friends.

29.  Go to a restaurant

Leave a good tip and slip in a paper with the URL of your recent post on it.

30.  Inform Internet Browsers

Tell them to make your recent posts the default home-page of everyone who uses the browser.

Furthermore

As you can see, many people go at crazy lengths to get their next post read.  However, it really isn’t hard if you create good content, follow some of the good tips a I gave you, and have patience.  No one created a great blog over night.
