Supporting Details: Support Your Points and Ideas

by Jake O'Callaghan

Supporting Details are pretty easy to write.  For most writers, supporting details are a natural part of an article.  However, they can be messed up if you don’t know how to write them correctly.

The main thing you should focus on is keeping the details on topic.  If you go in different directions, it is hard to understand why you made your point in the first place.

Supporting details support the main idea of the sentence.  They provide back-up or reinforcement for your point.  For instance, if "all cars use way too much gas," is the main idea of your paragraph, your next sentences, or supporting details, shouldn’t be "Honda makes fuel efficient cars."

Another problem is going off in different directions.  When writing supporting details make sure that they support the your point at all times.  It may sound obvious, but you will be surprised how easy it is get off topic.  Readers will get confused when you do this, and think you are scatter-brained.

Avoiding these two issues are great, but improving your supporting details is even better.

Create sentences that support the topic of your paragraph.  The more they support, the better they are.  It seems that examples and quotes work best.  However, add whatever you think best supports your topic.

Supporting details are an important part of every article.  They are what take up most of the articles space.  Utilize them efficiently, and you have most of your article written.

Got your point here. I agree with you. It would be very confusing for your readers if you don’t stick to your main topic, then at the end keep them hanging. Hanging because of unnecessary details in what they read.

Exactly, some bloggers unintentionally go off topic leaving the reader hanging. Thinking about supporting details helps to stay on topic.

I could not agree more. This is one of the areas where I need big time improvement. I am so used to writing bullet point posts without too much of description attached. Probably it’s due to the overuse of powerpoint slides for most of my meetings and documentation.

Great, I’m glad you learned something (though bulleted list are good sometimes). BTW your English is very good. I was skimming your blog and found that you are much better at writing than almost any indian person I know. Good job learning the tough language.

Try to gather as much reference as you can to support your topic. It will put on extra weight to your point of view.

Yes, that’s the point of supporting details, and should be followed religiously when writing them.

I sometimes supply details to my points, sometimes I just create a list of points. I will try and remember to keep on track when supplying details and to try and make it short and sweet and to the point.

Good job! Lists are great too. Everything doesn’t have to be in paragraph form.
