50 Tips to Improve Online Writing

by Jake O'Callaghan

Content is king.  Content is king.  Content is king.  I throw up every time I read it I have heard it so many times.  Yes it is king.  We all know that.  So I will just get to the list without having to tell you any of that.

Oh, and you should also check out my Making Quality Articles Checklist post.  It is something you should check before publishing every post.  Anyways,  here’s the list:

typing

  1. Write like you are talking to a 12 year old.  In other words, write simply, dumb it down.
  2. Include many stories.  These really get a reader interested and they build personality.
  3. Write with personality.  You want people to remember your writing style.
  4. Edit, edit edit.  You need to make sure that you have said everything the way you want to say it.
  5. Add sources and resources.  Readers love it when you do that.
  6. Use lists often.  They don’t have to be big lists that take up the entire post or article (though they are great).  Use them wherever you can in the article.  Readers love to read lists.
  7. Write small paragraphs.  It is hard to keep the readers attention with big paragraphs.  Breaking them up into chunks will stop the reader from becoming overwhelmed.
  8. Write a introductory paragraph hook.  The hook could be the difference ( and likely is) between the reader finishing the article or clicking off.
  9. Make sure the title is catchy.  The title is what will bring the reader in in the first place.
  10. Learn how to spell better.
  11. Put your web-page through a spell checker.
  12. Clear away any distractions.  Distractions really makes your writing suffer.
  13. Try outlining articles or posts.
  14. Use transitions.  Don’t overdue it though.
  15. Use proper grammar
  16. Avoid cliches like "content is key"
  17. Practice your writing
  18. Use images in your articles
  19. Don’t pretend to know it all.
  20. Get personal with your readers.
  21. Always write with a goal in mind.
  22. Make sure to stay on topic.
  23. Never steal anyone’s writing
  24. Use quotes related to your topic.  Everyone loves quotes.
  25. Don’t overdoes exclamation marks
  26. Don’t ask too many questions in your writing.  These get annoying.
  27. DON’T OVERDUE CAPS.
  28. Never use one word to many
  29. Analyze other people’s writing
  30. Always try to improve
  31. Take criticism lightly, but also try to use it to improve
  32. Avoid unnecessary adjectives and adverbs.  These are pointless and annoying to the reader.
  33. Never write sentences just to fill up space.
  34. Spend almost as much time editing as writing
  35. Write like you know what you’re talking about.  (even if you don’t)
  36. Write about what you actually know about
  37.  Never give  up writing
  38. Always try to make the best article you can.
  39. Don’t write repetitively
  40. Always, always follow my writing tips. (oh, and make sure to subscribe)

Wrong Writing Techniques

  1. Write a long advanced article about the reasons you suck at writing.
  2. Tell your readers that they are stupid and you are the all knowing guru.
  3. Tell everyone that Shakespeare is nothing compared to your writing talent
  4.  Write repetitive articles
  5. If someone criticizes you, write them an email about all the things that they suck at and how you are better than them.
  6. When ever you feel the need to use the word "very" use more than once.  It’s a very very very very very very smart thing to do.  See how great it is.
  7. Whenever you write so, write it like this: soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
  8. Write whatever comes to mind.  At first you may be writing about blogging, but by the end make sure that you have written about your dreams and goals, oranges, and football.
  9. Neve chek your spell or grammar?  Why u ned do tha,;/
  10. Remember no matter to always copy content.  Everyone loves it when you do it including the search engines.

Yea, it took me a while to dumb it down to. It’s annoying not to be able to use vocabulary that you have learned.

Cool tips! I think all of them are really important, but the ‘Don’t pretend you know it all’ really stuck out for me. NO ONE knows everything, so don’t act like you do… if anything it looks bad!
