Why I Choose My Domain

by Jake O'Callaghan

It seems to me that many people are interested about my domain name.  Therefore, I have made a post so as to clear up any questions and criticisms the readers of this blog have had.

I would also like to thank my readers for their criticism.  I greatly appreciate  all the feedback, and am honored to be helped by all of you.

Reasons I choose a .me

To trick you.  Most of the people who come to this blog, if not all are webmasters.  Personally, whenever I get to a new website or blog I always look at the domain.  I analyze it to see if why they picked it and if I could get an idea off of it.  I also analyze the domain extension.

I assume that many of you also look at the domain name.  I have never seen a .me before.  Therefore, I would conclude that if I saw a .me on a website than I would go "Wow a .me.  So having a .me rather than a .com actually could help more people to remember my URL.  Muhahahahah

.me is the one of the fastest growing domain extensions.   .me will continue to grow and prosper.

This was originally a personal blog.  The original idea for this blog was to blog about the problems I faced during my Web Journey and other things about it.  I still do that somewhat, but I have now changed the concept.

It was available.  Most of the .com names have been taken.  Anyone can still get a good .me

Reasons for Web Journey

  • Web Journey is a short domain.  Domain experts will always tell you the shorter the better.
  • Web Journey.com went for some good money.  It’s always good to know that people would pay good money for a domain even if I didn’t get the .com.
  • Web Journey is easy to remember.
  • Web Journey has one of my targeted keywords in it.

Anyways, just a small post to let you in on my thought process before you label me as a web noob. (well I am in some ways)

Likewise, want to ask though what plugin are you using for the poll? I tested some wp plugins and they doesn’t seems to be compatible with the latest wp version.

Many inbound links is the first and most important factor I guess. Also as your site grows people will start to link to it. Same happens with me. Cheers

admin: Thanks, how is your .ws doing. Now that’s a unique extension. (:Domain extensions do not affect search engine placement at all.The only thing that you lose if you lose if type in traffic with an extension other than .com.

Thats true. Being a non lover of .com and a natural SEOlist I don’t really care about the extension. And it does adds to the uniqueness.

p/s- the site is doing pretty well and ranking for the first page for the main keyword target. We get around 10k per day and the load on my hosting sucks.lol..

Pretty unique domain there Jake. Any extension does not really have a sever impact on the site. Its just that .com is something that people (I mean normal people) has always been used to so they receives more typeins than other extension like .net /.org and .me goes way back :) (Lol.. no hard feelings k) Anyway good to see that your blog ranks pretty well on SE eventhough using .me . I believe with proper SEO any blog can rank well without needing to rely on .com only. Your idea of being unique is a cool one.

WebJourney is totally brandable, it would have been unreasonable to think a .com or .net version would be available IMO.

The fact that you are trying to make a webmasters blog on a domain other than a more recognized one like .com or .net is an awesome step to branding yourself and being a little more unique.

Do you know if there are any SEO differences between the different extensions?

Yea, I love the name. When I knew it was available I had to bounce on it. I have big plans to buy .com and .net too.

I’m sure that there is no Seo difference between domains that have no specifications for buying like: .com, .net, .org, .info, .me, and others. However, domains such as .edu or .gov may have Seo benefits. I don’t know for sure though; I will make sure to look into that.

I have to be honest with you. Your site is the first site I have come across using the .me

My site is a .com but it’s my surname which makes it unique (serradinho.com)

Cool little post there, Jake :)

Not meaning to sound patronising, but well done for actually putting thought in to your domain. I find a lot of people have stopped doing that…
